June 2011

Dear Fellow SKALleagues,

WOW! What a special Skal evening we had on Fisher Island in May. Hats off to David Smiley and his staff for hosting such a great event on Fisher Island. The atmosphere on the outside terrace, with a beautiful sunset and outstanding food and drink, made for a memorable evening. I would also like to thank Captain Donald and his crew on the Island Queen for taking us to Fisher Island by boat from Bayside Marketplace.

We would like to welcome our newest members to our club: David Smiley - (Fisher Island ); Eric Eimstad - (Miami Seaquarium); George Brice - (Nassau Paradise Island) and Natasha Le Roux (Z-Direct).

Summer has arrived and we have some great venues for our club. Our next event will be June 14 at Bongos Cuban Cafe in Seminole Hard Rock, Hollywood. Make sure you have sent in your reservation for this exciting event. Look forward to seeing you there.

Our summer continues with a weekend retreat in August 19-21 at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo Florida. SKAL Miami will be hosting the Skal Region IV South East Conference. Other Clubs in the region will be attending this event. David Ross has put together an outstanding itinerary for the club.

  • Friday night will be a Welcome Cocktail Reception at the Sunrise Villa
  • Saturday Morning Continental Breakfast at the Villa and a Golf Tournament
    (morning T-time)
  • Saturday Night a Cocktail Reception at the Villa followed by a Barbeque Dinner on the Beach
  • Sunday morning Continental Breakfast at The Villa's.

We look forward to this exciting getaway to the Florida Keys.

The Club would also like to thank Bob Burke for hosting the May Skal Executive Board meeting at his house. Always a pleasure to have our meetings there.

Best wishes and Skal!

Report from the 2011 NAASC Congress

Dear SKALleagues,

I am back from the 50th SKAL NAASC Congress, (North American Association of SKAL Clubs), held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, May 11-15 and both Jerry Eastep, your Executive Secretary/ Treasurer and I would like to express our gratitude to our SKAL International Miami SKALleagues for allowing us to represent the club at this event.

Attendance at the Congress was strong since SIUSA, (Skal International USA) requires all clubs in the United States to participate. SIMEX and SICAN have similar requirements. The congress itself was well-organized and the Skal Clubs of Mexico and in particular Puerto Vallarta did a fine job.

Thursday, May 12th was the NAASC Board Meeting in the morning and the SIUSA Board Meeting in the Afternoon. Numerous topics were discussed including the elimination of two regional Vice Presidents who would be replaced with two new Vice Presidents representing Membership and Public Relations.

Friday, May 13 NAASC opening ceremonies complete with folkloric entertainment as well as a welcoming speech from the Chief Admiral of the Mexican Navy with greetings from Mexican President Felipe Calderon. After the Business to Business session and lunch, we attended the SIUSA General Meeting which carried over into the early evening. Discussions continued over the restructuring of regional VP's, the Florimond Volkeart fund, Website modifications, communications in general and most importantly, membership.

Saturday, May 24 SIUSA Regional Meetings followed by the SIUSA General Assembly where we voted an a number of issues discussed earlier during the Congress including where the 2013 NAASC Congress would be held. After powerful presentations by Sacramento and Orlando, Sacramento was the choice of the electorate for 2013.

NAASC Congress for 2012 will be held in Bermuda next May. Skal International Miami hosting the Region IV summer outing was announced and we are in the process of inviting SKALleagues from around the world to join us this August 19-21 at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo.

SKAL International World President, Tony Boyle of Townsville (Queensland, Australia) was in attendance as well as the next probable President V. Enrique Quesada Barrios, (Mexico) and his probable successor, Mok Sing, (USA) Los Angeles Club.

The repositioning of SKAL International report by the Task Force will be addressed fully at the International Conference in Turku, Finland in September.
